Waiting for an AI to pass the octopus test

In a recent article, the MIT Tech Review describes a thought experiment called the octopus test whose goal really is to describe “how shallow today’s cutting-edge AI language models really are.” It also discusses some of the ethical problems that the creation of conscious machines would generate.
